Banned Restaurants

Saturday, October 28th, 2006

Over the years I’ve banned several restaurants either because of sanitary reasons (Kings Noodle for their room temperature ‘cold’ dishes), health reasons (Sonics and their ultra greasy breakfast sandwiches and tacos), or just downright life hazards (Taiwan Cafe and the pain that it caused many people; I’m surprised nobody’s died after eating their food yet…although many have come close).

Here’s my list of banned restaurants as of today. This will be an ongoing post because I will add to it when I find new ones to ban.

Burger King
King’s Noodle
Little Hunan
Snuffer’s
Sonics
Taiwan Cafe

Restaurants continue to serve larger and larger portions

Wednesday, October 25th, 2006

Have you noticed that food portions at restaurants seem to only get bigger over time? If so, you’re right, according to the results of a recent survey of 300 restaurant chefs reported by USA Today. Here’s an interesting statistic from the survey: 60% of chefs serve steaks that are 12 ounces or larger. The recommended serving size for meat is 3 ounces.

Many restaurant chefs continue to serve larger and larger portions simply because customers have come to expect it. It’s no wonder that obesity has become such a problem in our country.

Larger portions isn’t a bad thing though if it means getting a good value for your money. The key is to limit the amount you actually eat. Our recommendation the next time you eat out: share an entree with another person, or ask for a to-go box.

Scroll Pan and Other Kitchen Gadgets

Friday, October 20th, 2006

This scrollable frying pan looks pretty useful. You can check out the other winners for the “kitchen is the heart of the home” design competition here.

Nearly every kitchen has a storage problem with too much room taken up by pots, pans, equipment, and white goods. The Scroll Pan is a product which radically changes the way we perceive the regular frying pan. It folds and rolls and addresses the serious issue of storage. Great for cooking omelettes, bacon, steak etc the Scroll Pan introduces more fun to frying. Folding your omelette, for example, has never been easier. Different shapes and sizes as well as cooking surfaces would be available in the range and each pan comes with a storage sleeve which can be hung up. The rolling base of the pan could be made in a number of ways. Diphenyl silicone (plasma treated and Teflon coated) would produce a heatproof and flexible surface. Safe to cook on, light, durable and easy to clean the Scroll Pan is a modern, stylish and fun addition to the kitchen.

Return of the Automat

automat3.jpg

If you don’t know what an automat is, it’s because there aren’t too many around these days. An automat is a type of restaurant where you buy items from “vending machines” containing small windowed compartments (you’ve probably seen the mini versions that sell cookies and lunchables and other snacks). Their popularity declined in the 60’s and 70’s, and the last real automat in the U.S. closed in the 90’s.

But two entrepreneurs are bringing the automat back to the U.S. with their opening this year of Bamn in New York City. The restaurant features “hearty comfort food choices - some with an Asian twist - at vintage prices.” Even though you’re essentially buying the food from a vending machine, the food is made fresh throughout the day. Seems like a pretty interesting concept.

Send an e-Ice Cream Sundae

Monday, October 16th, 2006

Know a co-worker who’s feeling down because he/she just got laid off or a friend who just had a big fight with their spouse? Well now you can cheer them up with an Ice Cream Sundae even if they live 400 miles away. Everybody likes Ice Cream right? And no, your friend won’t be getting a sticky two-day old sundae in the mail.

At www.icecreamsundae.com/festival4.html, you can send a virtual sundae to brighten someone’s day. While you’re there, you can actually learn quite a lot about ice cream sundaes. And not to mention, there are a couple amusing pics that might brighten your own day. :)
