Blogvertise

Saturday, September 9th, 2006

Blogvertise seems to be quite a popular topic of discussion these days so we’re going to check it out and see if it lives up to all the hype. If you’ve never heard of Blogvertise, basically it’s a way to generate income for your blog by writing about certain products, companies, or general topics that are “assigned” to you.

It may sound kind of fishy but the thing is you just have to give your honest opinion — praise, compliment, complaint, disagreement, whatever. So let’s see how it works out and hopefully we’ll be able to give an update in a couple weeks.

Return from Mexico

Thursday, August 3rd, 2006

So last week I got back from Juarez, Mexico and I must say it was probably the most amazing experience I’ve had. I was down there for a missions trip for 2 weeks and during that time, I had the opportunity to try truly authentic Mexican cuisine.

Probably my favorite thing to eat there were their chalupas from this chain of “Mexican fast food” that would probably be equivalent to our Taco Bell or KFC. Unfortunately, I was not able to capture any pictures from my own disposable cameras but I will be on the look for them from the other members on my team. But basically, they served mini pocket chalupas. They were no bigger than maybe 4 inches in diameter and you could choose what you wanted inside. The ones I enjoyed the most were the Cactus Chalupa and the huevo con queso, which was basically just egg and cheese. Each Chalupa went for about 6.50 - 7.50 pesos; approximately $0.65 - 0.75 USD.

Another thing we had were their authentic burritos. Now these burritos definitely weren’t your ordinary burritos you find at Taco Bell. One burrito - the chicken & potato with red sauce was extremely spicy - enough for even me to need water…after my 3rd or 4th serving that is. But for those who didn’t have a high tolerance for spicy foods, it was difficult enough to handle more than a bite. The tortillas they used there were far better than any we have here. It actually stayed soft and warm even after we left it out for 1 hour on the cooler.

Towards the end of the week, we tried this authentic Mexican buffet. The ambiance inside was amazing. It depicted a outdoor night cafe though everything was indoor. The entire restaurant were meticulously decorated with cardboard boxes, designs, and props as detailed as real clothes hanging from the balcony to simulate a surrounding town. Then at the center when you look above you, you see silver star-shaped pinatas to accompany the dark blue top. The food was actually pretty good too. 3/4 of their buffet line items I didn’t know what they were called but it was nonetheless delicious. My favorite, though, was definitely their desserts. They had a separate dessert line where they gave you small portions of Flan, Walnut Pie, and other true authentic Mexican desserts. The flan was by far the best. Unlike the ones here, it was actually “cakey” and didn’t taste like Jello.

It’s good to try different foods from around the world. It’s always a new adventure when you’re introduced to a whole new world of different styles of cooking and cuisine. My only regret was not bringing my digital camera.
